Rainmaking for Law Firms

In a law firm, the rainmaker is the partner who brings in the work. Most firms have one or two, and the pipeline dries up the year they slow down.

Rainmaking is ICONA's program for building that pipeline into the firm itself. It starts with visibility: when a prospective client asks Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews who to call, your firm has to be in the answer. It continues with trust: the website, the content and the reviews that convince that person you are the right call. It ends with intake: the enquiry becomes a booked consultation instead of a missed call or an unanswered form.

ICONA's team has been doing this work since 1999, and today we work exclusively with Canadian law firms. Everything in the program is built to respect the advertising rules of your province's law society, because a rainmaking claim your regulator objects to costs more than it earns.

Be Found

Prospective clients start with a question, and more of them now get an answer from an AI system before they see a list of links. We audit how your firm appears in Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews for the questions your clients actually ask, then fix what keeps you out: technical faults, missing pages, and content that answer engines cannot read or cite. SEO and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) run as one job, not two.

Be Trusted

Being found earns a visit, not a client. Before anyone calls, they read your lawyer bios, look for a real answer to their problem and check your reviews. We make sure what they find holds up: plain-language content that answers the question, bios that read like people rather than résumés, structured data that tells search engines and AI systems who you are, and a review approach that stays inside your law society's rules.

Be Chosen

A phone that rings is only rain if someone answers it. We look at every step between the first click and a booked consultation: the contact form, the phone and email prompts, response times, and what happens after hours. Then we remove the friction. The firm that responds within the hour usually wins the client from the firm that responds tomorrow, whatever their rankings say.

Be Measured

Rainmaking is measured in consultations booked, not visits logged. We track the events that matter (form submissions, calls, bookings) and report on them in plain language, alongside a quarterly re-check of where your firm shows up in Google and in AI answers. You see what is working, what is not, and what we are doing about it next.

How It Works

Start With a Snapshot

  1. Visibility Snapshot. A fast, fixed-scope read of where your firm stands today in Google and in AI answers, with the handful of gaps that matter most. It answers one question: is this worth solving now?
  2. Rainmaking Audit and Roadmap. The full picture: every finding, ranked by impact, and a 90-day plan we walk you through on a call rather than leave in a PDF.
  3. Build. We carry out the roadmap with you on a scoped monthly retainer, or hand it to your own team to run.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "rainmaking" mean for a law firm?

In law, a rainmaker is the lawyer who brings in the clients. As a program, rainmaking means building that ability into the firm itself rather than relying on one or two partners' networks: a firm that is easy to find, easy to trust and easy to hire, so new matters arrive whether or not anyone was out shaking hands that week.

How is this different from SEO?

SEO is one part of it. Ranking on a Google results page still matters, but a growing share of prospective clients now get an AI-generated answer first and never see the list of links. Rainmaking covers being found in both places, and then everything that happens after: the content that earns trust and the intake that turns an enquiry into a booked consultation. Traffic that never becomes a client is not rain.

Do you guarantee rankings or AI citations?

No, and we would be wary of anyone who does. Search engines and AI answer systems change without notice and sit outside any agency's control. A guaranteed-rankings promise is also exactly the kind of claim Canadian law societies scrutinize in lawyer advertising. What we commit to is a documented process, findings you can see for yourself, and a roadmap you can hold us to.

What does it cost?

It depends on the firm, the market and the competition. A sole practitioner in a smaller city and a multi-office firm in Toronto are not the same engagement and should not be priced the same. The Visibility Snapshot is a fixed fee. The Audit is a fixed scope with a quoted price. A retainer is scoped to your firm once you have a roadmap in hand. Ask for the Snapshot and we quote the rest from what it finds.

How long until we see results?

Technical and structured-data fixes can change how AI systems read your site within weeks. Movement in Google usually takes a few months. Consistent appearances in AI-generated answers are newer territory, with less predictable timelines across the whole industry. Once we have seen your Audit, we give you a realistic estimate for your market rather than a generic promise.

Is this compliant with law society advertising rules?

Everything we build is written to respect the advertising rules of your province's law society: no guarantees, no unverifiable superlatives, and no comparative claims about other firms. Your own review of anything client-facing is still part of the process. We make it easier by handing you clean copy to approve rather than a pitch to police.

How do we start?

Request a Visibility Snapshot through the contact form, or book a 20-minute call if you would rather talk it through first. We respond within one business day — usually the same day. We work in English and French.
